San Beda, Letran rule NCAA tennis

SAN Beda and Letran showed its championship poise by nipping separate foes recently in the 85th NCAA table tennis and lawn tennis competitions at the Emilio Aguinaldo College Gym and Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

The Lions leaned on eventual Most Valuable Player (MVP) Japheth Adasa in overtaking last year’s titlist College of St. Benilde (CSB) to rule the men’s division.

In junior's division, Karl Angelo Bolado was crowned high school MVP after he paced the Cubs over San Sebastian to complete a back-to-back title.

In the distaff side, the Lady Blazers reigned supreme for the fifth straight season.

The Knights meanwhile edged last year’s champions the Blazers, 2-1, to bag the lawn tennis title holders this year.

San Beda, which also ruled demonstration sport soft tennis Sunday, continued its juggernaut as it ruled the high school division by smashing last year’s winner CSB, 2-1.

Perpetual Help and San Sebastian finished third and fourth in the seniors’ section while San Sebastian and Letran ended up third and fourth in the juniors’ class.

Football crown bid

College of St. Benilde (CSB) ended the eight-year reign of rival San Beda in men's football after scoring a shocking 1-0 victory at the PhilSports field in Pasig City.

The Taft-based booters finished with a tournament-best 8-1-1 (win-loss-draw) record as they foiled San Beda’s bid for a “nine-peat."

CSB also ruled the juniors play at the expense of San Beda via 3-0 sweep.

It was the Junior Blazers’ 11th straight win to top the football play, the second to the last event in the NCAA calendar.

The NCAA will end the season on March 1 with the staging of athletics event at the Rizal Memorial Track and Field Oval. (Virgil Lopez)
