SPIKERS from the National University made history for the school on Saturday, capturing their first-ever UAAP men’s volleyball crown at the expense of last year’s champions Far Eastern University (FEU).
NU clinched the victory, 26-24, 25-22, 23-25, 25-19, in Game 3 after failing to finish the series last March 6 at the packed Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Peter Torres, a 6-foot-3 standout from Leyte National High School in Tacloban City, scattered 13 attacks, including the game-winning smash en route to bagging the Finals Most Valuable Player award.

“Tiyaga at tiwala lang upang mag-champion. Kailangang pagbutihan at kailangang mas mag-improve pa ang laro namin,” the 19-year-old told reporters at The Arena in San Juan City.
The Bulldogs could have won the match in straight sets but Edwin Tolentino committed a service error, giving the Tamaraws the chance to come back through substitute Ranie Yumang who scored the set point.
NU then leaned on Torres, Berlin Paglinawan and Rueben Inaudito in the fourth set to avoid the deciding fifth set.
NU, host of the league’s 75th season, also won men’s beach volleyball, men’s badminton and men’s lawn tennis.
John Depamaylo paced the Tamaraws with 16 hits, including four blocks, while Arvin Avila and Karl dela Calzada added 11 and 10 points, respectively. (Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)
