RP cagebelles seek Asean crown

MANILA -- The Philippine women’s basketball team is confident of bagging the gold medal in the 7th Southeast Asian Basketball Association Women’s Championship slated October 24 to 29 at Ninoy Aquino Stadium in Manila.

Team manager Cynthia Tiu of Perlas ng Pilipinas expressed said the ladies will rule the five-nation meet for the first time, citing, “I don’t have any doubts that we will win the gold.”

The RP cagebelles will open their campaign on Sunday against Singapore. Thailand is the defending champion in the tournament, where Laos and Malaysia, are also seeing action.

Earlier, the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) delisted the women’s basketball team from its roster of representatives for the 16th Asian Games in Guangzhou, China next month due to time constraints.

National coach Haydee Ong said the lack of height won’t deter the cagebelles in putting up a good fight.

“We are a defensive team,” she said, adding that powerhouse teams Thailand and Malaysia loom as the strongest contenders. (Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)
