Negros First

THE invitation for the oath taking of the Sangginiang Panlalawigan and the Governor and Vice Governor was to be preceded by a Mass. That is the best way really to start a new chapter in anyone’s term. It was pouring cats and dogs at three in the afternoon so I decided to come latish and just be on time for the ceremonies.

The Marañons are known for their promptness. A truly admirable trait especially with the famed Filipino time. I have known Governor Joseph to be more than punctual and it would take a lot of coaxing to convince him to stay when programs do not follow the schedule of invitations. Governor Freddie likewise adheres to this very notable practice. Rains allowed a little delay but the heavens opened and the skies cleared for the inaugural presentation.

All the Board Members of the 6 districts looked dapper in their starched barongs when doing their promise to be public servants. The guests were requested to come in smart casual but Filipiniana attire would be most appreciated. Considering the weather, some ladies did come in Philippine wardrobe. Most gentlemen were in their barongs.

I believe that Governor Freddie verbalized his whole agenda as new leader for the whole province in just 2 words; Negros First. 2 words simply said but carried considerable weight and difference. Sometimes politicians say much and do little. As is said: Little talk, little mistake and when too many promises are said, delivery of said promises are to be expected. But when a mother statement is pronounced, especially with fortitude and integrity then you create a bond of trust.

I also was touched by his declaration that reformation should start from the bottom and not from the top. Rehabilitation cannot only be achieved in one’s sanitized milieu for even in one’s household, order is achieved if children and helpers are happy and content. In an agricultural province like ours, when workers get their fair share, then there is joy and pleasure in work. More so in the governing a domain. There is much to be redone in the system from bottom to the top!!! Governors and Mayors have a tough job because it is a 24/7 call and totally hands on job!!! You cannot just govern from the confines of your office but must address the needs of every constituent high and low. It is a demanding job. The Marañons have been on the job for decades and rule of thumb is that experience and practice is always the best teacher. So from their vast familiarity with governance, although it will not be a walk in the park, the journey will not be likened to a neophyte testing the waters.

The event was well attended and from the political, social, business strata. There was even a Japanese contingent present who acclaimed their Banzai. The Aguilars came in full force, some all the way from Australia to give their felicitations personally. Most Sagaynons came like the Lopezes, the Pueys and many more friends and relatives.

With the weather cooperating, the lagoon looked festive with bands, a rondalla playing and outstanding local singers providing the music. Food was aplenty. As the Governor said, Negros First and food that was served was tumandok Negros. There was free flow of guests interacting and the extension of congratulations to the Mayors and Congressmen and all local officials who were present. While the ambience was a casual and candid, yet the atmosphere was joyful. A great beginning indeed!!!

To Governor Marañon, Vice Governor Lim-Ao Alvarez and to all elected officials, we congratulate you!!! The task ahead is not easy but with GOD’S grace and guidance it will surely be a great term for all of you!!! Also, to our new President Nonynoy and Vice-President Binay, God Speed!!!
