3 explosions hit Zamboanga Sibugay

ZAMBOANGA CITY -- Three separate explosions rocked Zamboanga Sibugay on Thursday, barely a week after a grenade attack at a local radio station owned by the province's governor.

First Lieutenant Steffani Cacho, information officer of the Western Mindanao Command, said the explosions happened in the towns of Titay and Kabasalan in Zamboanga Sibugay.

There was no immediate confirmation as to the motives of the suspects.

Cacho said the first blast happened around 8 p.m. Thursday at the residence of Lakas-Kampi-Christian Muslim Democrats (CMD) mayoral candidate George Castillo in Titay town proper.

The blast hit the perimeter fence of Castillo's residence.

The second explosion occurred near the village hall of San Antonio, where local candidates of Lakas-Kampi-CMD were having a political rally.

"We were all at the stage when it happened," said Provincial Board candidate Quirino Esguerra Jr. in a telephone interview Friday.

The military said crude bombs were used in both explosions.

No one was reported hurt, said Cacho.

The third explosion was caused by a grenade thrown by an unidentified man in front of a policeman's residence in downtown Kabansalan.

Three bystanders were wounded in the attack that occurred around 8:30 p.m. Thursday.

Cacho said the victims were having a conversation in front of the house of a certain Police Officer 3 Barcua, who was assigned at Kabasalan police station, when the incident happened.

The victims were brought to a hospital for treatment.

Thursday's attacks came a week after unidentified men lobbed a grenade at a local radio station owned by Zamboanga Sibugay Governor George Hofer in Catibog village, Titay town.

Police are still investigating Monday's grenade blast.

Hofer is the Lakas-Kampi-CMD candidate for mayor in Ipil town, the province's capital.

His daughter, Representative Ann Hofer is running for governor, while his son, Jet Hofer, is running for congressman in the province's second district.
