TACLOBAN CITY -- Residents in parts of Eastern Samar were awakened Wednesday by another earthquake that occurred at 5:50 a.m., barely 24 hours after a predawn 4.4-magnitude quake.

State volcanologists said Wednesday's tremor, whose magnitude is 5.0, was tectonic in origin. Its epicenter was 24 kilometers northwest of Borongon, the capital of Eastern Samar province.

The quake was felt at Intensity 4 in Borongon and Sulat towns; Intensity 3 in Taft, Can-Avid and Llorente towns in Eastern Samar, as well as in Catbalogan City, Samar; and Intensity 2 in Tacloban City in Leyte, Gen. MacArthur and Mercedes towns in Eastern Samar, and Calbayog City in Western Samar.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said no damage to property was expected, but aftershocks may occur. (Sunnex)
