Surigao mayor abducted, 1 soldier killed

SURIGAO DEL SUR (Updated 5:34 p.m.) -- Suspected communist rebels abducted a mayor and his two military escorts, and killed one of the soldiers pursuing them.
Reports said that Mayor Henry Dano of Lingig town and the two soldiers were abducted around 5 a.m. by suspected New People's Army rebels.
The armed suspects reportedly barged into the house of Dano and forcibly took the victims.
The suspects, who disguised as National Bureau of Investigation agents, were on board three vans.
Military spokesman Major Eugenio Osias said the rebels ambushed the responding troops, killing one and wounding five.
They reportedly proceeded toward Davao Oriental province.
The motive behind the incident was not yet known.
Police are now conducting hot pursuit operations against the suspects.
Last May 5, 2010, former Lingig town mayor and now Vice Mayor Roberto "Jimmy" Luna Jr., together with four of his security guards, was abducted in Monkayo, Compostela Valley.
