Sun.Star wins DigitalFilipino Web Awards

MANILA -- The Sun.Star website at www.sunstar.com.ph won in the newspaper category of the 4th Digital Filipino Web Awards held Wednesday afternoon at the Intercontinental Hotel in Makati.

Joy Flores-Ablanida, Manila editor of Sun.Star Network Exchange - the department that handles the website, accepted the award in behalf of Sun.Star.

DigitalFilipino.com recognizes websites that have successfully met their online goals. These sites advocate the use of the Internet and e-commerce for business and content development.

The recipients of the awards are from web-based publications from various industries like media, education, banking, retail, community, and government.

Jannette Toral, site owner and founder of DigitalFilipino.com, said the winners this year are those who are willing to take the risks and initiate change.

Winners were also meticulously picked through the following criteria: website page views, unique visits, technical performance, and the search engine visibility of the site.

Sun.Star was one of the 27 organizations recognized by DigitalFilipino.com.

The Sun.Star website is Internet home to the only network of community newspapers in the Philippines. It pools together news and other information from 12 major cities around the country, namely: Bacolod, Baguio, Cagayan de Oro, Cebu, Davao, Dumaguete, Iloilo, Manila, Pampanga, Pangasinan, Tacloban, and Zamboanga.

In May 2010, Sun.Star recorded 179 million hits with 19 million pages viewed and 2.2 million unique visits.

Other winners are: Yahoo! Philippines (Portal category), Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Government), Philippine Stock Exchange (Organization), Smart (Telecommunication), GMA (Television), Nokia (Gadget), and Top Gear (Automotive).

Also recognized were E-Games (Gaming), Sulit Philippines (Market Place), Stylebible.ph (Fashion), Spot.ph (Reviews), Philippine Entertainment Portal (Entertainment), Philippine Airlines (Travel), Nuffnang (Corporate), 88DB (Directory), Sun Life (Insurance), Jobstreet (Jobs), and WikiPilipinas (Reference).

Completing the list are FHM (Magazine), Philippine Basketball Association (Sports), Philippine Boxing Forum (Community), Friendster (Social Network), University of the Philippines (School), Metrobank (Banking), Yugatech (Technology), and PC Express (Retail).

Aside from the Web Awards, Digital Filipino club also held a two-day annual E-Commerce summit entitled "DigitalFilipino E-Commerce Summit 2010: Doing E-Commerce for Real."

The two-day intensive educational seminar helped inform local players on the latest e-commerce strategies and trends.
