MANILA -- A 22-year-old Filipina university student surfaced on Thursday to claim she was raped by a US serviceman.
The woman, identified to the media as “Vanessa,” broke down as she read a prepared statement detailing how she was raped by the US soldier last April 19 in a posh hotel in Makati City.

She, however, declined to identify the suspect, choosing to refer to him only as “John Jones.”
Women's group Gabriela said the US serviceman is part of the Joint US Military Assistance Group (Jusmag) that took part in the RP-US Balikatan military exercises.
Vanessa was joined by lawyer Evalyn Ursua, the lawyer who defended Suzette Nicolas or “Nicole” in the controversial Subic rape case, in a press conference at the office of Gabriela.
Ursua said Vanessa has not decided yet if she is filing a case, but “it was clear she was raped.” The lawyer said they have all the necessary papers needed, including the medico legal report, in case the victim decides to bring the matter to the court.
But Gabriela said Vanessa is not filing a case in court because of what happened to Nicole, who recanted her allegations against US serviceman Daniel Smith a few months ago.
Malacañang, meanwhile, challenged Vanessa to file a case against her rapist.
Deputy presidential spokesperson Lorelei Fajardo said the woman should avail of her right to due process in court.
“There should have been a police investigation. It's a little difficult to establish facts. If she files a case, the government would be ready to give her assistance and support,” Fajardo said.
She said that while rape is “despicable” and should be condemned, it would be premature for the Palace to do so because no case has been filed in court.
It would be better if the Commission on RP-US Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) could conduct a preliminary investigation on the matter, added Fajardo.
The Palace official appealed to the media not to make the issue too controversial because there are no facts to begin with.
“Rest assured that we have learned from the case of Nicole and that is being considered. I don't think that will happen in this case again. If ever there is really a case of another rape victim, I don't think that the same incident with Nicole will happen this time,” she said.
Vanessa and the alleged US Marine first met in a bar at The Fort Bonifacio Global City in Taguig City last April 10.
In 2005, Nicole accused Lance Corporal Daniel Smith of raping her inside the Subic Freeport.
A year later, a Makati court convicted Smith of rape and sentenced him to 40 years of imprisonment. But the Court of Appeals reversed the lower court’s decision after Nicole recanted her allegation.(JMR/Sunnex)

A good girl does not go
A good girl does not go alone in the hotel room of a man in the heart of the night...only prostitutes do that! She does not even know him well...she met him in a club...if she has really been raped...she is a willing victim or she deserved that!
This is another girl with
This is another girl with her hand out, she shouldn't have been at a bar unless she was looking to find a victim. Let's hope she presses charges!!! Maybe Obama will have the brains to pull out the $669 million he promised in 2010, it's just going to end up in corrupt people's pockets anyway, it's not like it's going to go to the people it's intended to.
why is it always front page
why is it always front page news when an american gets mixed up with a filipina? philippine newspapers are always full of stories about fathers making daughters into sex slaves, preteens prostituting in cemeteries, neighbors raping neighbors and on and on and on. you get one american in the news, american and not korean, japanese, filipino, nigerian, and even malacanang gets in on the act. everyone sees $$$ right away and everyone wants in on it....how pathetic. kurakot nation
This student has not been
This student has not been raped. She cooperated with the US Marine to make things happen in the hotel in lieu of US$.
LOL. Gabriela cries rape
LOL. Gabriela cries rape again? What else is new? The source of this accusation, Gabriela, is a good indicator this is just another radical anti-American feminist publicity stunt and no reasonable or intelligent person should take these accusations seriously.
It is a sick joke, and the worst part about these phony rape victim stories is that it discredits and demeans real victims of rape and abuse. Studies in the US find that most rape accusations are false, and almost all college girl rape accusations are found to be false. Not only are the accusations false, but the handling of false accusations gives a good indicator of the efficiency and credibility of security services. ie: campus police with the highest percentage of rape accusations deemed false, are found to have lowest crime rates.
Those security forces with high numbers of unsuccessful rape prosecutions are found to have the highest crime levels and lowest overall quality of security services. Think about this for a moment, it makes sense.
If 9 out of 10 rape accusations are false, police waste their time on false accusations, and have no time for the real cases, who they will tend to disbelieve anyway, due to the preponderance of false accusations. If a rape accusation were made by a credible police force, it would tend to be a lot more believable.
An accusation by Gabriela is just a sick joke, because we all know its real agenda is a feminazi-style propaganda war against America, and men, especially American men. When one of these stories arise I always think about the fine reputation that Filipina women enjoy all over the world, and how Gabriela supporters shame them.
Logically, these accusations make no sense, as a typical marine or American enjoys earnings 10 times the Filipino wages, and it is absurd to take criminal risks for rape when fine women are available at insignificant risk/cost. It is the romantic, but undemanding nature of Filipina's that foreign men find attractive (in addition to good looks). The US marines would also be highly interested in mental lapses or disorders of one of their members, as they pride themselves as an elite and highly disciplined unit.
The odds of Gabriela crying rape being true are worse than the odds of Hatton defeating Pacquiao. Women of low character, like Gabriela, use the idea of 'rape' like a club to lash out at men, and to ignite hatreds of zenophobic supporters. These stories are nothing more than propaganda tools and free political advertising.
Men and women of reason should only concern ourselves with the very few cases which are true, and not continue to fuel the counter-productive hysteria of Gabriela propagandists and extortionists.
too much publicity about
too much publicity about rape. but when the complainant recants for some reasons, it's a total waste.
It's nonsense. Shame on
It's nonsense. Shame on these girls claiming they are raped. This is all screwed up. How could this guy rape her in a hotel; she knows better she's 22 years old. She should know better not to go w/ any male to a hotel. I think she wants to have sex and want something else but since she didn't get what she wanted, she is calling it rape. This guy didn't drag her to the hotel I know she went with him on her own free well. That what these girls get when they are party animals, poor parent though because they are working hard for their children and look what they're doing, going out w/ men and accusing guys of raping them. I also think that Nicole wasn't raped she wanted it. If an American citizen raped her why would she opt to come to the US. Shame on her.

why doesn't this lawyer get
why doesn't this lawyer get herself a job defending the rights of people who deserve it, rather than spending her time on witch-hunts. if the girl wants a cup of coffee she can do that in a coffeeshop. she went to the hotel room willingly and most likely fully expecting some private moments. well maybe the payment was not big enough or the sex not good enough, in either case it was her choice to go there. nice girls don't disappear in hotel rooms with their men on the first date, after meeting in a bar. alcohol men and hotel rooms have always been a risky combination. i know. i have been there. when do they ever learn !!!!! it's a matter of choice.
I am a woman & born in
I am a woman & born in Philippines. I agree all the comments here. It's nothing but shame! When you go freely inside the hotel with a man, think always that something will happen. Is this another ticket to the US? Do not degrade our own nation.
maybe she was hoping she
maybe she was hoping she would get a high-end cellphone after their fun time at the hotel but gets a low-tech one instead.
