Vice Mayor Vicky Vega-Cabigting said activities like these were not done or highlighted in the last three years.
“Especially, the Mutya ning Angeles, it’s just now that we’re having it again. We’re putting back all the activities we used to have,” Cabigting said.
She said Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan poured in efforts to make this year’s festival more meaningful.
Fiestang Kuliat is a month long celebration of the city’s resilience in honor of its patron saint Blessed Virgin Mary of Rosary. Kuliat was the former name of the city.
Archie Reyes, acting city tourism officer, said more than 50,000 visitors are expected to flock the city especially during the Tigtigan, Terakan keng Dalan.
“We want to attract more visitors so we lowered the prices of the tickets for the Tigtigan while we expanded the area for it,” Reyes said.
From P100 last year, tickets are now priced at P50 while the area for the Tigtigan is now five kilometers.
It was Pamintuan who pioneered the Fiestang Kuliat celebration in 1992. It became his landmark project during his first term as mayor.
“Fiestang Kuliat is an original Angeles festivity brought about by the sorrow of the Mt. Pinatubo eruption. Naisip ko noon palagi na lang ba tayong nalulungkot? Umalis tayo dito sa ating shell na nagpapahirap sa atin. We must have a festivity,” Pamintuan said.
Pamintuan added that the Fiestang Kuliat is included in the list of activities of the Department of Tourism.
The event also gives opportunity to local and foreign tourist to experience the revelry and charm of the city.
Other activities include 4x4 off-road competition, painting contest and exhibit, car show, photo contest, mountain bike competition, golf tournament and a cultural night. (Charlene Cayabyab)
