CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- Vice-Governor Joseller “Coach Yeng” Guiao adds another feather to the pride cap of the Capampangans and the whole country as well when he steered the Powerade Team Pilipinas to rule the 8th Southeast Asian Basketball Association (SEABA) league at the Angkasapura Lanud Basketball Hall in Medan, Indonesia.
Guiao easily drove the national squad Tuesday night to a swift and easy victory over host Indonesia, 98-68. The RP 5 blasted the Indons in their debut meeting, 103-64.

Prior to the finals, the hard fighting RP cagers sent a sad Singapore to the dug-out, 117-69, sweeping the preliminary round last Monday.
With the crown, the vice-governor-coached squad has secured one of the two slots for the FIBA-Asia men's basketball championship in Taijin, China this August and automatically a berth in the coming Jones Cup this July in Taipei, Taiwan.
“Our emphasis is to really ingrain the fast break concept on the guys, whether we’re playing a strong, big team or a small team that’s also quick like Singapore and Indonesia," said Guiao. “The important thing for me is to be consistent with the running game."
Guiao has since been confident of what he termed was the first tall-team ever assembled to play in international competitions.
“This team is taller. They are better prepared and are bonded well. There no conflicts in personalities and it should be tough as we face taller opponents. But we are determined to win,” Guiao said.
After a close first quarter duel, where the Indons even held a slim lead, the Filipino team split the game wide-open in the second quarter with blazing guns and capitalizing on a 12-0 run for a 46-32 halftime lead.
An Arwind Santos pass to a streaking James Yap, who finished the fastbreak play, capped that scoring spurt for the RP 5. From thereon, it was easy cruising for the PBA-backed national squad. With 4:31 left in the third period, the Indonesian five could only muster 43 points against the Filipinos’ 60.
The RP cagers enjoyed as much as 39 points, their biggest lead at 95-56 as the clock winded down to four minutes in the closing period.
Guiao’s fast running games proved effective all throughout the league as the RP cagers dominated the June 6 to 10 tourney with lopsided victories over Malaysia, 100-73, Singapore and top contender Indonesia.
Guiao was selected as head coach of the national team from a pool of about 8 equally fiery coaches from the country’s premier professional and amateur leagues. He left a multi-titled Red Bull Barako Team to guide a younger Burger King squad.
