ANGELES CITY -- He was the last man standing in the endurance test that became very intense with the scorching heat of the sun from morning to afternoon -- and then relentless heavy downpour in the evening.
But Arnel Pido, who works as a houseboy in the City of San Fernando, bested 52 other male and female contestants at the last leg of the 2013 Subaru Impreza Challenge Philippines held at the parking lot of MarQuee Mall in this city last Saturday.
Pido kept his hand firmly planted on the Subaru -- even despite distracting obstacles like the hoola-hoop and Jumping Jack “breakers -- for a total of 10 hours, 51 minutes and 50 seconds, which culminated near midnight when his fellow challengers, including about three previous Singapore leg contestants, gave up.
For his feat, Pido earned for himself an all-expense paid trip to Singapore together with qualifiers from Cebu, Davao and Manila. The 10 winners will test their mettle once more in the Asian Faceoff October this year, 2013, where they will battle it out with 390 challengers from Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong, Cambodia, China, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam and Taiwan for the grand prize of an-all new Subaru Impreza 2.0i 6-speed M/T Sedan worth about P1.158 million.
The Impreza Challenge took Pido and his fellow contestants to the task of putting their palms on the car and SUVs the longest, with just a five-minute break to eat, drink and take a "recess" for personal necessities every six hours.
Pido said the challenge was indeed "very grueling" and required a lot of focus, patience and determination. He added that he will do his best to become the first Filipino winner of the finals in Singapore.
The Philippines made its debut in the Subaru Impreza Challenge in 2008 which started in Singapore in 2002 together with other Asian countries.
