Grader in 'gang beating' moved to another school

ANGELES CITY -- A grade four student of the Royal International School in Barangay Balibago here who was allegedly "gang-beaten" by classmates upon the instance of his own teacher has been transferred to another school in Manila because of the "traumatic" incident.

On Monday, Evelyn Castillo, the mother of Jason Mark, told Sun.Star that she has decided to move his child out of the school because he has been "severely traumatized."

"I think as a mother and a teacher myself before, it is best that he just transfers to another school and start anew," Castillo said. "But we will pursue the case against his teacher for abuse of authority and the school's incompetence."

The complaints of Castillo stemmed from an incident last January 21 where his son was allegedly allowed to be "beaten" by four of his classmates after a "playful wrestling game" with the permission of their science teacher Emmanuel Manaloto.

In the complaint lodged before the Angeles City Prosecutor's Office, Castillo said Manaloto allowed them to beat up his son to "show how it is to be ganged up upon."

After the incident, she said, his son fell sick for a week and was unable to attend his classes because of nausea, vomiting and attacks of asthma.

A medical certificate from the Angeles University Foundation Medical Center attested to the medico legal findings and linked the incident to the student's health conditions. Castillo said this was already the second incident such actions has affected his child.

"The first was in July last year where the class president asked (him) to 'squat' while holding books as punishment for being 'noisy.' Their teacher left them at that time to the custody of the class leader. But after that, my child suffered from severe asthma attacks," Castillo said.

She added that even with the medical certificate issued by the hospital and notice released the school principal, his son was continually subjected to stressful activities until the beating incident occurred.

"I am not after them paying the hospital bills or anything to discredit the school. I just want justice for my son and his being traumatized at such a young age. But all the teachers got was a five-day suspension. Is that fair?" Castillo said.

The Department of Education's Regional Office, in its Resolution No. 10-2009, dismissed Castillo's complaint and cleared the school of any responsibility in the incident, citing that the "circumstances of the instant complaint show that the issues raised (by the complainant) concerns school policy, decisions and its authority and management which dwells purely on internal matters," which DepEd has no authority to rule upon.

Meanwhile, Manaloto, in his counter affidavit, denied the allegations of Castillo, saying that his purpose was just "to motivate the class and show them how painful it is for a child to be ganged up and beaten by more than one classmate."

He said he asked four of the students involved in the beating to stand up, asked the class who wanted to beat them up, and that he purposely did it "knowing fully well that one will take my words literally and be able to clarify my message that it is painful and embarrassing for a child to be ganged up by more than one of his classmates."

Manaloto also sternly denied having instigated the beating as the reaction of the students was just a "tapping" of each other on their shoulders and Jason Mark's hips.

How can it happen in the

How can it happen in the school??? What kind of teacher and school are like that? I will never send my kids to Royal International School...never ever!!!

Teacher Manaloto shouldn't

Teacher Manaloto shouldn't only get suspension but should not be allowed to teach anymore. He doesn't know what and how a teacher means to his students. Besides, is he licensed to teach? I guess not. Here in the Philippines, a teacher, be it in public or private, should be licensed. I hope before schools or institutions hire their teachers, they (teacher applicants) should undergo certain procedures and should really be qualified to teach to avoid incidents like this.

He (teacher) is supposed to be the mediator and not to cause anything that could hurt his students. I am a teacher, and, as a teacher, we make a difference in the lives of our students. We touch the lives of our students. We do these to make our students become better persons and contributing members of our society.

In this case, yes, the teacher made a difference, he caused trauma to his student (Jason) which could affect the child's mental & emotional development.

it is extremely shocking!! i

it is extremely shocking!! i cannot understand what the teacher's reasons were for treating his young students that way...that doesn't make sense. moreover, it's not fair for the student to leave his school, move to Manila for that reason. i hope it will not happen again.
