TOKYO - The Subaru Legacy has won the "Grandprix 09/10" in the Japan New Car Assessment Program or JNCAP for 2009, according to Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd., the manufacturer of Subaru automobiles.
This is the third consecutive year Subaru received the honors, after the Impreza was awarded "Grandprix" for 2007, and the Forester and Exiga were awarded "Excellent Car" for 2008.
The Legacy is the only vehicle to be awarded the Grandprix 09/10 of JNCAP. It was rated as the safest passenger car in the collision safety performance tests for driver's and front passenger's seats, as well as pedestrian head protection performance test during fiscal year 2009.
The Legacy reached level 4 in the rear seat passengers' protection performance evaluation during a frontal offset collision test, and level 4 in the whiplash injury protection performance evaluation test respectively, which were both newly-adopted evaluations from this fiscal year.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism or MLIT and the National Agency for Automotive Safety and Victims' Aid or NASVA conduct new car assessment every fiscal year aiming at encouraging the use of safe automobiles by increasing users' interests in automobile safety and by promoting the development of safer cars by manufacturers.
This award adds up to a string of safety awards previously attributed to the Subaru Legacy, and further establishes its global status as one of the safest passenger cars on the market.
It was recently awarded 2010 "Top Safety Pick" by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) in the US, and reached top 5-star for occupant safety in the latest round of crashworthiness testing by the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP). It also got top 5-star rating in European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP).
For Subaru, it is essential to enhance not only "Passive Safety" but also to pursue "Active Safety". Subaru is committed to offer confidence as well as sheer driving excitement to its customers, leveraged by the combination of its original Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive system and Boxer Engine. Subaru will continue to provide peace of mind by further refining its distinctive safety technologies.
