Bishops ‘just conduit of donations’

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- Archbishop Paciano Aniceto clarified Saturday that bishops are “just conduits” of donations extended by the Philippine Charity Sweepstake Office (PCSO).
The prelate’s statements came in the light of the controversial “Pajero 7,” where some bishops allegedly received sports utility vehicles from the PCSO.
Aniceto, who chairs the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP)’s Episcopal Commission on Family and Life, also denied receiving a vehicle from PCSO or donations for the purchase of one.
“Our bishops and clergy are just conduits of these donations the Church receives from donors like PCSO. Doon sa mga Pajero ay wala akong alam diyan and I am not one of the recipients,” he said.
The recipients of the illegal donations for the purchase of the sports utility vehicles were the Diocese of Butuan under Bishop Juan de Dios Pueblos; Zamboanga Archdiocesan Social Action Apostolate under Archbishop Romulo Valles; Archdiocese of Cotabato under Archbishop Orlando Quevedo; Diocese of Bangued, Abra under Bishop Leopoldo Jaucian; Roman Catholic Prelate of Isabela, Basilan under Bishop Martin Jumoad; Apostolic Vicariate Bontoc under Bishop Rodolfo Beltran; and Caritas Nueva Segovia (Ilocos Sur) under Archbishop Ernesto Antolin Salgado.
The CBCP has reportedly launched its own probe into the allegations.
