CENTRAL Luzon Region is the second highest contributor to the Philippine economy outside the National Capital Region, an official of the National Economic and Development Authority (Neda) said.
Neda regional director Remegio Mercado said the region’s contribution to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) averaged at almost 10 percent.
“Central Luzon’s economy has always exhibited resiliency despite devastating weather disturbance since 2000,” Mercado said.
He added that government rehabilitation and recovery programs have been successful particularly for crop production.
“Palay (rice) annual production and area harvested increased in 2010 despite the devastation brought by Typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng in 2009,” Mercado said.
He further explained that palay production increased to 1,476,120 metric tons from 1,464,445 in 2010.
Mercado was optimistic that the continued collaboration between the private and government sector in Cagayan Valley will continue its sustainable and moderate growth in 2011. (Anthony Bayarong)
