CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- Mayor Oscar Rodriguez viewed the ongoing impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona as a way of strengthening the country's judicial system.

"Ang prosesong ito ay hindi pagpapahina kundi pagpapalakas sa hudikatura," he said.

Rodriguez made the statement during the 2011 Seal of Good Housekeeping Awarding Ceremony at the Heroes Hall on Wednesday.

"Alam namin ang tunay na nangyari. Sa kaso na lamang ng League of Cities of the Philippines (LCP), nagpatuloy ang pagiging siyudad ng 16 na munisipalidad kahit hindi nakaayon sa batas ang mga ito," Rodriguez, also president of the LCP, added.

Rodriguez also dismissed allegations that the impeachment case was one of President Benigno Aquino's ways of implementing dictatorial system of government.

"Hindi totoong ang kasong ito ay tungo sa diktadurya. Do not abuse your mind on that thought. It will not happen in the time of our beloved president (Mr. Aquino)," he said.

Rodriguez, a close ally of the Aquino administration, said the impeachment trial is important in pushing good governance in the country.

Corona is accused of betrayal of public trust, graft and corruption and culpable violation of the Constitution.

Corona, who became chief justice during the Arroyo administration, was impeached by the House of Representatives on December 12. Senators have started his impeachment trial on Monday.
