Students get P350,000 educational aid

STA. ANA — Some 300 students were beneficiaries of the Municipal Government’s P350,000 educational assistance fund that was distributed by Mayor Rommel Concepcion over the weekend.
Concepcion said the fund is part of the assistance for school year 2012-2013 to selected indigent beneficiaries.
Under the said fund assistance, poor students are given cash to augment their tuition and other school needs.
The program benefits students from marginalized families as identified by the Municipal Government of Sta. Ana through the help of local barangay chief.
Some of the high school and college student beneficiaries received P2,000 and P1,000 cash assistance, respectively.
Concepcion started the fund assistance two years ago through a funding support approved by the Municipal Council.
“This fund assistance is just small and could not even be considered as a scholarship grant. But the point of this assistance is to help indigents who really have little means to meet expenses in their education,” Concepcion said.
Concepcion reported that the Municipal Government had already given P1.4 million in cash assistance to scholars, numbering 123 for high school and 436 in college for the year 2010 alone.
For 2011, an allocation of P2 million has been appropriated by the Municipal Government for the educational assistance program. (Ian Ocampo Flora)
