CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- Fernandinos planted some 1,126 trees in 17 barangays of the city during the recent celebration of Arbor Day.
Volunteers and officials from all government agencies, barangays, students from private and public schools, and representatives from non-government organizations conducted the simultaneous planting of forest trees like mahogany and other fruit-bearing saplings in observance of Arbor Day and in accordance to law.
Senate Bill 3146 revived the local Arbor Day that also requires Filipinos over the age of 12 to plant one tree every year.
Department of Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo also said in a statement that the agency “mandates all local government units, government agencies, as well as private and public schools to participate in the said activity to attain the 1.5 billion trees to be planted in 1.5 million hectares across the country.
For his part, Mayor Oscar Rodriguez said: “It is necessary to conduct simultaneous tree planting activities in the city to compensate for the loss of natural resources, avoid flash floods and to rejuvenate our environment. We must all do our share, we must take our part.”
During the city’s observance of the greening activity led by the City Environment and Natural Resources Office, “malunggay” trees were similarly planted in support of the upcoming Nutrition Month in July.
