Scouring of riverbanks endanger thousands-A A +A

CANDABA – Floodwaters in some villages here may be receding slowly, but thousands of residents in Barangay Bambang still remain exposed to danger due to the Pampanga River’s embankment breaches.
“Bumigay na ‘yung gilid ng ilog sa aming lugar kaya malakas pa rin ang agos ng tubig. Maraming mga bahay ang pwedeng masira kapag nagtuloy-tuloy ang malakas na dating ng tubig,” Ramon Macaraig, a resident here said.
Macaraig said barangay officials, with the help of some residents here, spearheaded a sandbagging activity to prevent the scouring of the river along the section of Barangay Bambang.
However, he said that the sandbags failed to withstand the strong water current coming from upper Pampanga River.
“Bali tatlo ‘yung pigtas kaya hanggang ngayon ay malaki pa rin ang tubig dito sa amin,” he said.
Another resident here said that there is a leak that goes through the Pampanga River all the way to the rice fields on the other side of the community.
“Sumisibol kaya ang tubig mula sa ilog kaya patuloy na humihina ang pundasyon nito,” the resident said. (Herbert P. Mapiles)
