Guv wants reservoirs in water channels

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- Governor Lilia Pineda on Wednesday told municipal engineers from the 2nd District, as well as provincial engineers, to inspect various water channels and tributaries in the area immediately and assess the possibility of putting up mid-stream reservoirs and impounding dams or catchment basins.

During the flood-intervention meeting at the Executive House of the Capitol where municipal engineers from Floridablanca, Sta. Rita, Guagua, Lubao and Sasmuan presented their damage reports from the recent calamity, including intervention programs of works, the governor ordered for an urgent survey of rivers, creeks and tributaries to save the towns from sure devastation if another typhoon strikes the province.

“With the cooperation and advice of the DPWH [Department of Public Works and Highways], we should identify areas where we could construct water reservoirs to impound water from the upstream and put it into good use like for irrigation. Ang kailangan lang ay ma-prevent ang flashfloods at malawakang pagbaha ulit,” Pineda said.

She said such inspection and survey should be conducted as soon as possible to save the 2nd District from further devastation.

“May panahon pa to save the second district. Tayo na sa Kapitolyo at sa local government unit ang kikilos at kailangang kumilos na tayo ngayon,” she added.

Governor Pineda said it is the Capitol that has the capability to undertake the needed anti-flood interventions.
