CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – Students from the Kyungbuk College in Korea recently visited the Sacred Heart Medical Center in Angeles City and the Officer’s Village in Camp Olivas in this city to offer social services.
The students were part of the third batch of students who are taking part in the “Global Camp in the Philippines” subsidized by the Ministry of Education in Korea.
The Kyungbuk College organizes and generates the Global Camp with Holy Angel University in Angeles in every summer and winter.
The students were spread out to two teams, with those majoring in Nursing and Health going to the medical center, while those whose courses are service-related visited the Filipino heroes of the Korean War.
One of these heroes is Eduardo D. Sundian, 82, who joined the Korean War as part of the UN force. He told the Korean students about his journey during the war and showed a scar in his right leg left he got from a grenade blast.
“Thank you to all the students who came here to meet me,” Sundian said. “I never expected that Korean students would visit my house and say ‘thank you’. I am really glad to meet them and talk with them.”
He had been given an appreciation letter from Myung-Bak Lee, who is the president of the Republic of Korea in 2010.
On the other hand, those who visited the Sacred Heart Medical Center gave vital checks and basic physical therapy treatments to Filipino patients. They even delivered the diets for the patients.
“It was a really a fruitful experience. We were able to show how we appreciate the Filipino society and learn some about the system of health care in the country at the same time,” Yoo-Ri Jung, 36, said. She is taking up Physical Therapy at Kyungbuk College.
“We would like to thank all our Filipinos friends because we learned so many things in this country. This social service is one of the appreciations for the Filipino society,” said Tae-In Kim ,21, representative of Korean students.
