SUBIC BAY FREEPORT -- USS Olympia (SSN 717), a submarine of the Los Angeles class design, will arrive in Subic Bay today, Friday, for a routine port call, the US Embassy said in a statement.
The port visit highlights the strong historic, community, and military connections between the United States and the Republic of the Philippines, the embassy added.
It said the visit will allow the ship to replenish supplies and give the crew an opportunity for rest and relaxation.
The USS Olympia SSN 717 set sail in February 1986 to her home in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. She is the second United States ship to bear the name in honor of the city of Olympia, Washington.
Original USS Olympia was commissioned on 1895 and, as part of the Asiatic fleet, became the flagship of Commodore George Dewey at the Battle of Manila Bay in 1898.
No further detail was given out to the media. (Anthony Bayarong/Sun.Star Pampanga/Sunnex)
