Pampanga governor worried for Arnedo folk

SAN SIMON -- Governor Lilia Pineda said she is worried for the residents of this town following the decision of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to abandon the Arnedo Dike.
The governor said almost all the barangays here were located inside the Arnedo Dike, which is now deteriorating due to strong current of water from Pampanga River, particularly during rainy season.
"Dito sa bayan ng San Simon nakapasok ang halos lahat ng barangay sa dike kaya delikado kapag umaapaw ang ilog," Pineda said.
DPWH executives previously disclosed that they will no longer rehabilitate nor reconstruct the scourged portion of Arnedo Dike, adding that no amount of engineering intervention could still save the said dike.
The Arnedo Dike is now more than 70 years old and it has already outlived its life span.
With this, the people living near the same were told to abandon the area, because it is now deteriorating and it cannot withstand the strong current.
Several portions of the dike in the towns of Candaba, San Luis, Apalit and Masantol are reportedly collapsing.
