CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- The Department of Education-Pampanga (DepEd) Office clarified recently that public schools may still be used by evacuees but only as "pick-up points."

DepEd-Pampanga School Superintendent Malcom Garma said that in extreme cases, local officials may temporarily bring their flood-affected constituents to public schools while waiting to be transferred to the appropriate evacuation center designated by the concerned local government unit.

Garma made the clarification before provincial and municipal officials, along with barangay leaders during a meeting at Clark Freeport on Monday.

"Schools can only be used as pick-up points for evacuees but not as evacuation centers," she noted.

It can be recalled that Garma earlier announced that the use of classrooms in public schools as evacuation centers is no longer allowed.

She first made the announcement during the disaster preparedness meeting with the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, Municipal Disaster Action Officers and municipal engineers.

The school superintendent stressed after the onslaught of floods, they also need to clean the classrooms and repair damaged properties essential to studies of the pupils.

This, according to Garma, could not be done immediately with the prolonged stay of evacuees in public schools.
