DPWH: P637M needed for flood-control project-A A +A

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- An official of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in Central Luzon said that some P637 million is needed for the proposed dredging of the Labuan, Camachile-Ventura and Dalan Pari Rivers.
DPWH Regional Director Antonio Molano said the dredging activity might be the ultimate solution to the life-threatening flooding problem in the towns of Minalin, Sto. Tomas, Macabebe and Masantol.
He added that aside from the dredging of Labuan, Camachile- Ventura and Dalan Pari Rivers, the re-opening of the original water-flow in the upper stream from Gugu River to Pasig Potrero River is also another priority project needed to address the problem on flooding.
The Pasig-Potrero River is "closed" upstream inside the Megadike, thus the water is forced to flow to the left through the Gugu River.
Molano, during a recent briefing with the local chief executives in the flooded municipalities, stated that they have been doing everything to ensure the integrity of all ongoing flood control projects.
The director also noted that the DPWH is not an "enemy" of the mayors, saying that they are "partners" in saving the people from any danger through the rehabilitation, restoration of the tail dike and re-channeling of water flows including the dredging of the silted portions of the riverbed.
"Magkakampi po tayo sa laban na ito, hindi po tayo magkalaban," Molano told the mayors.
It was also observed that the Gugu Creek flows to the Dalan Pari Creek, which is beside the tail dike.
The Dalan Pari Creek is supposed to flow out to the Sasmuan River through the Labuan River, but this body of water is blocked.
Meanwhile, Representative Juan Pablo Bondoc (4th district), in a meeting on Thursday with the Save Minalin Movement, donated P500,000 to augment the sandbagging operations on the breached portion of the San Francisco section of the tail dike.
Bondoc lauded the DPWH regional officials Molano and MPE-PMO Assistant Director Lita Manalo for their concern, and in assisting the flooded towns of Minalin, Sto. Tomas, Macabebe , Apalit and Masantol.
The lawmaker said two bulldozers and one backhoe on barge were dispatched by the DPWH to close the breached portion and to undertake flood mitigation measures.
"Malaking tulong si Dir. Molano at si Madam Lita sa mga ka-distrito natin na naapektuhan ng pagbaha sanhi ng pagkabutas ng tail dike. Sa pakikipagtulungan ng ating opisina, ang DPWH at ang mga LGU concerned ay matutugunan ang problemang ito (flooding)," Bondoc said. (With reports from Chris Navarro)
