CANDABA -- The Department of Agriculture (DA) on Wednesday turned over more than 550 sacks of palay seedlings directly to farmers whose rice fields were submerged in floodwaters.
The distribution was spearheaded by Agriculture Undersecretary for Operations Dante De Lima, Regional Director Andrew Villacorta and other employees of the department.
They were assisted by Mayor Rene Maglanque and Vice Mayor Normita Evangelista.
De Lima assured farmers that the National Government is committed to providing them assistance in various capacities, including the provision of farm inputs and farm mechanization support.
"Huwag po kayong mag-alala dahil alam namin ang inyong pangangailangan at ginagawa po namin lahat ng aming makakaya para matulungan sa pagpapataas ng inyong ani," he said.
The seed subsidy given to farmers is also in line with the rice sufficiency program of President Benigno Aquino III, which is aimed at providing enough supply of rice for every Filipino although some provinces identified as top palay producers were hit by the calamity.
The undersecretary shared that he is a son of a farmer in Bicol and he himself is a farmer before he entered government service.
This he said is his inspiration in discharging his duties in the department.
It was learned that some 1,200 hectares of rice fields here were affected by the recent calamity, with more than 500 hectares totally damaged.
"Nagpapasalamat po tayo kay Presidente Benigno Aquino, kay Secretary Alcala dahil nagsisimula pa lang ang baha ay nandito na sila nag-aantabay sa ating mga magsasaka," Maglanque said.
Villacorta, for his part, disclosed that of this reported damage, 300 hectares were already validated by the Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC) for entitlement of benefits.
"Mayroon din tayong quick response team para tumulong sa paghahanda sa lupa," he told the farmers.
