STA. ANA -- Three farmers were killed while two others were seriously wounded when they were shot by still unidentified gunmen a few meters away from their house in Ape St., Barangay Sta. Maria in this town Saturday evening, police said.
Chief Inspector Paul Gamido, town police chief, identified the fatalities as brothers Rodel Romero, 46; Angelito, 39 and Pedro, 33, of Barangay Sta. Maria of the said town.
The wounded were identified as Bernabe Romero and Rowena Romero, wife of Pedro. Both victims are recuperating at the Jose B. Lingad Memorial Hospital in City of San Fernando.
Gamido said the victims were walking home from a drinking spree when they were fired upon by the gunmen using a 12-gauge shotgun.
The victims sustained multiple gunshot wounds in the body.
Investigations show that the victims had been implicated in a series of robbery break-ins and theft of livestock in their area.
The police are looking into several angles in the shooting incident.
Gamido said that during follow up investigation, he found out that nothing had happened prior to the incident that could have triggered the shooting.
Gloria Romero Cuate, eldest of the Romero siblings, said that four of the victims had been previously accused of crimes of theft in their barangay.
She added that Pedro was also allegedly involved in an illicit affair with a married woman whose husband is working abroad.
Gamido said they will pursue new leads based from the testimony given by Cuate to identify the real motive behind the shooting incident.
Provincial police director Senior Superintendent Oscar Albayalde ordered all police stations to intensify operations in order to maximize security and prevent such incidents from happening again. He also directed all the units of provincial police to find the suspects behind the shooting incident.
"The Pampanga PPO will not rest until justice is served to the family of the victims," Albayalde said.
