CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- Two passengers, including an elderly, were killed while nine others were seriously wounded over the weekend when the bus they were riding skidded and hit the perimeter fence along Kilometer 68 in the Barangay Del Carmen-San Fernando portion of the North Luzon Expressway (NLEx).
City of San Fernando police and NLEx officials identified the fatality as 77-year-old Eugenia Baltao-Cabrera of Project 8, Quezon City, who was with a still unidentified victim when the Isuzu bus (AVC-342) registered under Viron Transit figured in the mishap around 2 p.m. Friday amid heavy downpour.
The two died on the spot while those seriously hurt, plus seven others who sustained minor injuries, including conductor Edmel Umalia of Ilocos Sur, were immediately taken to the Jose B. Lingad Regional Memorial Hospital in this city for treatment.
Authorities told Sun.Star Pampanga that the bus driven by Florencio Bibay was cruising at high speed towards Manila from La Union when he allegedly lost control of the wheel. The bus skidded about 50 meters, swerved and turned right side down before hitting trees and then colliding with the concrete perimeter fence.
"Bigla na lamang po akong nawalan ng control at hindi na naiwasang sumalpok kami sa bakod ng expressway," Bibay said.
Police said proper charges are now being prepared against him and the bus company.
