CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- The City Government of San Fernando on Monday started implementing an improved parking and traffic scheme, initially by ridding the front of city hall of parked government vehicles.
The move, according to Mayor Edwin Santiago, is to avoid traffic snarl, congestion, enhance safety of pedestrians and give the city market and local traders maximum exposure.
"We have secured a foreign grant which will re-study and recommend improved parking as well as traffic re-routing. While waiting for the grant to materialize, the City Government has decided to start this sort of clearing operations," he said. However, he has yet to divulge the donor and amount of grant for the study.
Santiago told Sun.Star Pampanga that the improved parking and traffic scheme will cover more areas of the city proper in the coming days.
"We started with our very own here at city hall by moving out service vehicles to nearby parking areas like in the church patio and the plaza at Jose Abad Santos Street. We as well implemented the ‘pick and drop’ near the public market scheme for select passenger jeepneys to give our local traders added exposure, make the market more accessible and boost vibrancy of local businesses there," he stressed.
As for additional parking spaces, Santiago said the City Government is currently looking for private partners willing to put up multi-level carparks in the city to solve the shortage of parking spaces.
"The City Government is willing to give investors for carparks and parking lots tax incentives because such investments will help make San Fernando more traffic-free and pedestrian friendly," he said.
