CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- Governor Lilia Pineda on Monday urged Pampanga mayors in disaster prone areas to "act fast and respond swiftly" in rescue and evacuation efforts.
"You must act fast like Mayor Bon and all your response systems must always be in place. (Typhoon) Santi is a warning of worse things to come so you must be prepared. Hindi na biro-biro ang nangyayari. Dapat, wala ng casualty sa mga darating na bagyo at calamity," the governor told the mayors.
Pineda lauded Arayat Mayor Emmanuel "Bon" Alejandrino for his immediate action that averted the loss of lives during a landslide at the height of Typhoon Santi (international codename: Mirinae).
In attendance during the emergency meeting and Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office assessment at Benigno Aquino Hall in Capitol were mayors Condralito Dela Cruz of Porac; Pampanga Mayors League president Oscar Tetangco, Jr. of Apalit; Leonora Wong of San Simon; Asiong Macapagal of Minalin; Lito Naguit of Sto. Tomas; Omeng Concepcion of Sta. Ana; Roy Manalastas of Mexico; Dante Torres of Guagua; Nardo Velasco of Sasmuan; Eddie Guerrero of Floridablanca; Ed Flores of Minalin; and Alejandrino.
Pineda also urged the local chief executives and their respective municipal engineers to immediately identify emergency relocation and evacuation sites that are on safe ground.
"You must submit your recommendations on these evacuation centers. Puwedeng pataasan at bakuran at lagyan ng facilities like comfort rooms ng provincial government ang mga covered courts ninyo. If worse comes to worse, dapat three days bago dumating ang bagyo, pull out na ang mga residente sa inyong mga danger zones," she stressed.
The governor added that climate change is getting worse, that officials should always be on their toes.
"Climate change is getting worse. Baka sa susunod dilubyo na. Hindi na puwede ngayon ang mga tutulog-tulog na mga officials sa nangyayaring ito," she quipped.
