GUAGUA — The Department of Agriculture is pushing for the use of two rice varieties – NSIC RC-238 and NSIC RC-22 – which were found to be “suitable in the conditions of the farmland and year-round weather in this central western portion of Pampanga.”
This was gleaned after the DA conducted a P6-million study on the variety of rice breeds suitable to at least 81,000 hectares of rice land in the province.
Other rice varieties encouraged by the DA are NSIC RC-160, NSIC RC-21, NSIC RC-216, NSIC RC-152 and NSIC RC-240.
The DA said it aims to achieve 3.6 million metric tons (mt) production of palay for this year. However, the recent devastation brought by Typhoon Santi may offset a portion of the target this year.
The Bureau of Agricultural Statistics, Villacorta said, has recorded 1.7-million mt production for the first semester of the year.
The DA has also called on local government officials to join in a counterpart program with DA in bringing more farmers into insurance coverage, and allocating at least P1,500 for farmers in the program to increase their enrolment premium or at least bring more farmers into the insurance coverage.
The crop insurance programs entails a premium on the part of the farmer of P500 per hectare, which then translates to P3,000 if the farm is hit by floodwaters and has damaged crops.
For her part, Governor Lilia Pineda expressed support for farmer groups, as they explore better palay yield.
She also expressed optimism in the program, stating that the Provincial Government of Pampanga is helping farmers meet better farm yields through incentives and support programs on machineries, funding and other technical assistances.
“Farmers should be harvesting more, earning more and enjoying more of the benefits of the lands that they till,” Pineda said, as she vowed support for farmer groups as they federalize themselves through organizing better cooperatives.
Pineda also urged the farmers and farmer cooperatives to avail of the insurance program of the DA and partner with their respective local government units.
