SAN LUIS -- A young nurse who hails from this town has been recognized by the Friends of United Nations Population Fund (Friends of UNFPA) in New York City, United States of America, for her work as a health educator and advocate.
Twenty-seven year-old Anzaira B. Roxas, granddaughter of the late former mayor Ben Bondoc, is the Deputy Project Coordinator at UNFPA's implementing partner, the Family Planning Organization of the Philippines (FPOP).
The FPOP is a member of the International Planned Parenthood Federation.
Roxas also heads the National Steering Committee on Comprehensive Sexuality Education in the Philippines, which ensures the integration of sexuality education in the curriculums of the country’s schools.
At present, Roxas provides services through the Choices Project, which focuses on sexual and reproductive health and rights, and at the same time is active in the Youth Peer Education Network or Y-PEER, a groundbreaking and comprehensive youth initiative pioneered by UNFPA, which is a network of more than 500 non-profit organizations and governmental institutions.
After the country has been hard hit by typhoon "Sendong" in 2011, Roxas trained young people to become leaders in healthcare services and at evacuation centers.
Working with the UNFPA, Roxas provided health education to affected young people, lactating mothers, and pregnant women. She also initiated the compilation of disaggregated data to help government agencies collect information on previously unrepresented populations, allowing them to design disaster response efforts more specially aligned with citizens' needs.
She earned her degree as a nurse in 2007, and became a midwife in 2009.
Pride of the town
The Local Government Unit here on Monday recognized the achievements of Roxas.
Mayor Venancio "Asyong" Macapagal told Sun.Star Pampanga that Roxas is an inspiration not only to the youth but the people of this town.
"Pinagmamalaki natin si Anzaira bilang isang youth leader, educator at advocate of reproductive health at higit sa lahat, siya at anak ng San Luis," Macapagal said. (Chris Navarro/aapress.com)
