ANGELES CITY -- A barangay chairman here was shot dead by two gunmen Sunday night, after finishing a derby at the Angeles City Cockpit Arena in Barangay Claro M. Recto this city.
Efren Dela Cruz, incumbent chair of Barangay Santo Cristo and a former Liga ng mga Barangay president, sustained two gunshot wounds on the head, police said.
The closest motive in the killing is robbery, police said, but authorities said they are still looking at other motives including politics.
Dela Cruz was about to board his car at around 10:20 p.m. the other day when two men shot him at close range.
The victim reportedly told his political allies before the last barangay elections on October 29 that he has been receiving death threats.
Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan said he was saddened by the incident because all of the 33 villages took their oath of office and assumed their respective positions just two days ago.
Pamintuan went to the crime scene after he received the report. The mayor assured the victim’s family and friends that justice will be served.
He instructed Senior Superintendent Eden Ugale, city police officer in charge, to speed up the investigation to pin down the suspects.
Dela Cruz is a close ally of former Congressman Carmelo "Tarzan" Lazatin.
The village chief recently received citations and awards from the Department of Interior and Local Government for his programs on transparency and good governance.
