CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- The Provincial Government of Pampanga honored the late Governor Bren Z. Guiao for his legacy of good governance and service to Kapampangans.
During the recent Most Outstanding Kapampangan Awards of the 442nd Pampanga Day celebration, Governor Lilia Pineda and Representative Oscar Rodriguez (3rd district) handed the posthumous citation to Guiao’s son, former vice governor and now first district Representative Joseller.
Known for his popular battlecry “Eka Magmalun, Mibangun Ya ing Pampanga,” Guiao was acknowledged for his “dedication and sincerity of purpose in serving the Province of Pampanga as Governor under the Revolutionary Government from February 25, 1986 to December 31, 1986.”
He was subsequently duly elected as governor for two consecutive terms from February 2, 1988 to June 30, 1992 and June 30, 1992 to June 30, 1995.
“His statesmanship and resiliency fast-tracked the recovery of the Province of Pampanga and its people from the ashes of Mt. Pinatubo, resulting from the volcanic tragedy that occurred in the Provinces of Zambales, Bataan, Tarlac, Nueva Ecija and Pampanga in Central Luzon under his Program of Good Governance ‘Mibangun Ka Pampanga’,” read the citation.
Guiao is also known for pushing Pampanga to become a premier growth center, which even overtook Cebu in terms of economic progress.
He was also responsible for pushing the very first People’s Economic Council, which had the private sector participating in governance.
He oversaw the construction of the Pampanga Sports Complex, which hosted the Palarong Pambansa in his time, and which now bears his name as the Bren Z. Guiao Convention Center and Sports Complex.
