STA. RITA -- The Kapampangan independent film "Dukit" will be shown this January in a special screening for fans in Pampanga after it carted off major awards in the recently concluded 39th Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) under the New Wave Category.
Lead actor Willy Layug, who won Best Actor, said that they plan to show the film this January at SM City Pampanga and and SM City Clark pending schedules of its cast and director who will be also providing a press conference with local film fans and media.
"We would like to present the film again to Kapampangans as well as provide a tour of local universities and colleges here who would like to see the movie," Layug said.
"Dukit," the Kapampangan word for woodcarving, is centered on the region’s culture, its arts, crafts, food, music, values and traditions.
The story is about a celebrated Kapampangan sculptor Willy Layug, embittered by how the father abandoned his family for another woman. It takes him years and success to learn to forgive the old man.
It is Director Armando Lao's latest film and an official entry to the 2013 MMFF Independent Film category. The film is produced by Brillante Mendoza, a former student of Lao.
The film was judged as this year's Best New Wave Film and New Wave Best Picture in the 39th Metro Manila Film Festival Awards night. The film also bagged the Best New Wave Film Director for Armando Lao and New Wave Best Actor for Bor Ocampo, Willy Layug and Bambalito Lacap who portrayed the three generations of the main character.
Layug said that they are now finalizing schedules for the series of film screenings in Pampanga. He added that producer Brillante Mendoza is also welcoming sectors who would like to show the film in their respective areas.
