CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- Quarry collections for January 2-27 this year already reached P23,960,000 before the January 30 cut-off, signaling a positive start for the province's biggest income generating flag industry under the term of Governor Lilia Pineda.

Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office chief Art Punsalan told Sun.Star Pampanga that they are urging the public, quarry stakeholders, particularly truckers and operators, to support the program of the province for the quarry sector.

"We urge people to report any illegal activities or send their suggestions so that we can further improve the quarry system," Punsalan said.

Punsalan added that the current revenues for the month is a sign that quarry collection is doing well and that local and national demand for Pampanga sand is at a regular flow for the start of the year.

In the same period last year, the province collected some P26,215,000 for January due to high demand in local construction. For the whole 2013, the province was able to collect some P283,902,500. Also in 2012, the province collected some P292,017,500.

Since the Pineda administration took over quarry operations, the current system was able to collect some P957,645,000. The funds serve as the life-blood of most of the government projects of Capitol for education, health and infrastructure.

Punsalan also said that they are maintaining close monitoring and implementation of anti-overloading laws. Under Punsalan's watch, the province has deployed weighing scales to effectively implement Republic Act 8794, or the law governing anti-overloading.

The official reported that they have collected some P41 million in weighing scale fees in the implementation of the anti-overloading initiatives.

Punsalan said that they remain optimistic of the performance of the quarry industry here with government funded programs and private sector infrastructure projects kicking in for the first quarter of the year.
