CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- The cause for the canonization of Salesian Fr. Carlo Braga, SDB, has taken another step forward as the Vatican has approved the process.

Yesterday during the opening session of the Diocesan Inquiry to the Cause of Canonization of the Servant of God, Fr. Carlo Braga, the Holy See, in a letter delivered by Fr. Dino Pineda, said it had no objection whatsoever in the beatification and canonization of the priest who served in Pampanga and died in Bacolor during his ministry.

The Vatican furthered that the inquiry could now proceed, after the group tasked to compile requirements for the canonization have been sworn in.

San Fernando Archbishop Paciano Aniceto, Hongkong Archbishop Emeritus Joseph Cardinal Zen, other bishops, Salesian priests and the clergy of the Archdiocese of San Fernando, witnessed the opening session during the Eucharistic Celebration at the Metropolitan Cathedral yesterday.

Aniceto branded the opening session as a historical pastoral milestone, it being a first in the Archdiocese.

“The next step for Fr. Braga in his journey to sainthood would be beatification, but one miracle is required for this to push through. Kailangan ang miracle to prove that this man is really close to the Lord, and that his life is centered in Jesus Christ. Kaya ang prosesong ito ay mahaba,” Aniceto told Sun.Star Pampanga.

Fr. Braga, whose last years he spent serving the Don Bosco community in Pampanga, was also honored by the Catholic laity of San Fernando and Bosconian students and alumni, some of whom have had the privilege to be with the late priest.

Don Bosco outstanding alumnus Levy P. Laus said “He was more of the silent type. We did not have continuing interaction with him, but he was always visible in the premises of Don Bosco.”

Like Laus and other Salesians, the laity of Pampanga, especially those who have had a personal encounter with Fr. Braga, are hopeful that this declaration from the Vatican will be the bridge for his sainthood. (Fergie H. Fabian/Kristine Venet Q. Andal)
