CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- Mayor Edwin Santiago arrived in Xiamen, China Saturday as this city's famous giant lantern or "Parul Sampernandu" participates in the 4th Xiamen Lantern Festival this February 2 to 11.

The Philippine delegation led by Santiago together with city officials and members of the city's Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce, was welcomed by Consul General Julius Ceasar A. Flores of the Philippine Consulate General in Xiamen, China.

"This is part of the Consulate's cultural diplomacy thrusts for 2014," Flores said as he conveyed appreciation to the City's contribution to its cultural diplomacy efforts.

During the Chinese festival, a 20-foot "Parul Sampernandu" made by the Quiwa clan from Barangay Sta. Lucia is set to be lighted on February 2 at the Xiamen Horticulture Garden Expo.

Santiago also stressed that the activity will strengthen ties between the two cities – San Fernando and Xiamen – to foster a healthy partnership for economic development.

“We also want to build a lasting trade alliance with China,” Santiago said.

The five-day official visit includes official meetings with the Foreign Affairs Office, a study tour in major business establishments found in the area and a series of special meetings hosted by the Philippine Consulate General in Xiamen.
