GUAGUA -- Governor Lilia Pineda celebrates her birthday Friday with an ardent wish that Kapampangans, particularly indigents, will be able to avail of better hospital care from public hospitals here as she improves on the province’s health service programs.

“My birthday wish is that sick people will get well and properly treated in our hospitals,” Governor Pineda said in the vernacular during the launching of the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation’s Point of Care at the Diosdado P. Macapagal Memorial Hospital (DPMMH) on Wednesday afternoon.

Pineda, who shed tears before ending her speech, became emotional after some of the poor people she had helped gave her flowers.

In earlier interviews with journalists, Pineda refused to divulge the number of people she had assisted over the years with their medical needs. It was clear at the start of her first term in 2010 that health care is her priority program.

“We are not counting. It may be viewed as political if we say the number. We are determined to help and that’s only it,” said Pineda said.

“We have to be healthy first before we can work well and move forward towards progress as one Pampanga. Now, we are moving to the other equally important aspects of governance,” added Pineda, referring to her many social programs, including livelihood and employment, education, agriculture, and peace and order given priority on her second term.

Pineda, who will turn 63 Friday, allotted at least P500 million for the major improvements of the DPMMH and 10 district hospitals of Pampanga in 2013, disclosed Board Member Cris Garbo, chairman of the Provincial Board’s Committee on Health.

He added that they have allotted at least P400 million for 2014 to improve the operations and equipment after focusing on the infrastructure last year.

Asked to interpret the birthday wish of the two-term governor, Garbo said: “She wants all the hospital workers and officials to really love their work in order to serve well the people, especially the poor ones.”
