CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- Former President and now Pampanga second district Representative Gloria Macapagal Arroyo will celebrate her 67th birthday Sunday and the entire weekend in the company of relatives, friends, colleagues from the House of Representatives, spiritual advisers and other close allies.
This, after the anti-graft court granted Mrs. Arroyo’s petition to allow her loved ones to visit and stay at her Veterans Memorial Medical Center (VMMC) suite in Quezon City starting 9:00 a.m. Friday to 9:30 p.m. of April 6, Sunday.
Ferdinand Topacio, Arroyo's spokesperson, said that aside from immediate family -- former First Gentleman Mike Arroyo, children Mikey, Luli and Dato who will sleep over at VMMC -- the former President's classmates at Assumption College, her former Cabinet members, former colleagues at the Senate, and current colleagues at the House of Representatives will be among the 50 guests approved by the Philippine National Police for visits on her birthday.
Topacio added that her children and their respective families are expected to fully make use of the extended visiting hours allowed by the Sandiganbayan during the birthday weekend of the Kapampangan lawmaker.
He said that Arroyo's doctors and spiritual advisers, including her recent VIP visitors will send representatives during the weekend celebration where food will be potluck.
"The court granted Mrs. Arroyo’s request for her family to sleep there. I am sure there will be a thanksgiving mass on Saturday," said Topacio.
From the Palace: ‘Happy Birthday!’
Meanwhile, Presidential Communications Operations Office Secretary Herminio Coloma, Jr., in a press briefing, said that Malacañang had sent Mrs. Arroyo its wishes for her birthday.
“We want to greet her a happy birthday, and we hope that she will be happy celebrating it, along with her loved ones,” Coloma said.
A similar arrangement was allowed by the court for Arroyo’s Yuletide holidays in 2013.
Mrs. Arroyo's 67th birthday celebration is her third in confinement, after she was re-arrest in 2012 and detained for a non-bailable plunder charge in connection with the alleged misuse of Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office intelligence funds.
Complications from a cervical spine surgery forced her hospital arrest. Earlier, Mrs. Arroyo’s doctors opined that spending time with her family, relatives and friends will be good for the former President.
Her last medical bulletin submitted to the anti-graft court reported that her health condition continues to deteriorate due to recurrent dysphagia or difficulty in swallowing food.
