Santiago wants San Fernando ‘most liveable’

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- Mayor Edwin Santiago on Monday said that he has launched a program, which will put the city of San Fernando in the list of the country's "most liveable cities."

"We were wondering why all through the years and in 2013, San Fernando was not in the top 20 list of the country's most liveable cities, while Angeles City and Olongapo City were there. So we, together with our private sector partners, agreed to work on the five Cs which we hope will put us on the map," he said.

The five Cs, the mayor said, are convergence, coordination, cooperation, consultation and collaboration.

"During our recent kapihan with the private sector led by the PamCham [Pampanga Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc.], we agreed to unify our efforts in increasing investments and economic activities through local and international linkages, boosting tourism, widening the tax base without increasing taxes and maintaining peace and order. We see this running for the next three to five years," said Santiago.

He told Sun.Star Pampanga that stakeholders have identified 42 priority projects directed towards sustainability and making San Fernando a most liveable city.

"We have identified about 42 essentials to make the city attractive and liveable, particularly to investors who would eventually provide livelihood and employment opportunities not only to Fernandinos but to neighboring Kapampangan towns as well. Among others, we would create productivity centers, parks and museums, tourist sites, transport terminals, libraries, public gardens and plazas. What we pinpointed are those that are truly doable," added Santiago.

He said that together with these are serious programs on solid waste management, healthcare, environment, and peace and order campaigns.

“Many of what we envision would be on long term basis but there are short term programs that could be undertaken now. We are optimistic that with enough political will and the cooperation of all stakeholders, we could make San Fernando a very liveable city,” he said.
