CAMP OLIVAS -- A "mystery caller and friend" of pyramid scam lady fugitive Abigail Pendulas, the wife of Aman Futures Group Philippines, Inc. founder Manuel Amalilio, allegedly attempted to bribe elements of the Regional Intelligence Division (RID3) by offering P100 million for her release.

This was confirmed by Chief Inspector Melvin Montante on Thursday via text message, after the cancellation of a supposed press briefing regarding the alleged bribery.

Around 8 a.m. Thursday, a text message was received by the media, which read "Media Advisory: Press briefing today, 10 a.m. May 8 at Camp Olivas, Pampanga re P100 million bribe attempt of arrested pyramid scam fugitive Pendulas to the Intelligence Operations Section, Regional Intelligence Division-3 to secure her release. PCInsp Melvin Montante, head of ISOG will be available for interview."

There was no press briefing, but in a text message Montante confirmed the attempt to bribe the RID3 personnel.

In a separate statement, Montante narrated that an unidentified "friend" of Pendulas called her on her mobile phone, which she passed to RID3's SPO1 Jose Santos as the suspect was about to be brought to Camp Olivas.

Montante said the "mystery caller" claiming to be a friend of Pendulas then offered P100 million for her release. He said that the offer was instantly turned down the offer, as it was the strict order of Police Regional Office 3 (PRO 3) Director Raul Petrasanta not to entertain calls or offers from arrested prominent suspects.

Montante said Petrasanta ordered crime lab experts to trace the identity and whereabouts of the "mystery caller" by searching the phone of Pendulas.

On May 2, Pendulas, 26, was apprehended by operatives of RID3 at Party Place Restaurant located along McArthur highway in Barangay Dolores, City of San Fernando, Pampanga by virtue of an alias warrant issued by Judge Alberto Quinto of the Regional Trial Court 12th Judicial Region branch 1, Iligan City for syndicated estafa with no bail recommended.

Pendulas, a native of Olotanga, Zamboanga City and his companion identified as May Leechelle Ohales were relaxing at the said restaurant when arrested.

Ohales tried to help Pendulas to elude arrest by creating a scene at the said place but was pacified by RID3 personnel. (Ric Sapnu/JTD)
