MAGALANG -- The Pampanga State Agricultural State University (PSAU) here has not received any funding support from the Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) of any legislator, president Honorio Soriano Jr. disclosed last Friday.

In a briefing of members of the Campampangan in Media Inc. (CAMI), Soriano said most of its funding for various infrastructure and research programs came from government agencies and non-government organizations.

"There is no PDAF-funded project here," Soriano said, "particularly those from (Janet) Napoles."

PSAU, formerly Pampanga Agricultural College, was converted into a state university by virtue of Republic Act 10605 through the initiative of former representative Carmelo Lazatin of the province's first district and Senators Allan Peter Cayetano, Lito Lapid and Edgardo Angara Jr.

"We are only one of two state agricultural universities in the country today", Soriano bared, "the other one is in Bicol."

Soriano said former President and now Pampanga Representative Gloria Macapagal Arroyo released P50 million during her administration to establish the university's new library.

Soriano said PSAU is now among the top-notch educational institutions in the Philippines, ranked No. 4 all over the country in terms of its passing rate in the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) and has won a number of local and national awards on its research in energy, water and ecological conservation.

He said that PSAU's strategic thrusts are geared towards boosting agro-industrial development in Pampanga by producing top-caliber graduates and entrepreneurs and embarking on programs to help farmers and other stakeholders in the province.

Soriano said the university also aims to help alleviate poverty in the province.

"By producing entrepreneurs, we can help our graduates become self-employed and help employ others, too," he said.

Pampanga now has two state universities, the other being the Don Honorio Ventura Technological State University in Bacolor. (NCS)
