CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said Wednesday that it is halfway through flood mitigation works along major roadways here particularly along Jose Abad Santos Avenue (JASA) and Lazatin Boulevard in time for the rainy season.

DPWH district engineer Rico Guilas told Sun.Star Pampanga that the construction works for the canalization along JASA's section in Barangay Lagundi are moving as planned. Guilas, however, said that the P50-million project would have to hurdle right of way problems.

"We need the help of local government units for the right of way and settle problems of properties along the project," Guilas said, adding that the project would eventually lead to towns of Sta. Ana and Arayat in the coming years.

The project is expected to reduce flooding in the road along the said area and also serves as a preparation for the eventual road expansion of JASA.

Guilas added the DPWH has been cleaning canals along the major business district in Barangay Dolores in the City of San Fernando. Another ongoing work is also the canalization along Lazatin Boulevard.

"We hope that our efforts will help in reducing flooding in these areas. We also urge local government units and establishments along these areas to help us by making sure that garbage does not end up in the canals," Guilas said.

The DPWH here said that the major cause of canal clogging in the city is garbage that end up in the canals especially during heavy rains.
