CANDABA -- Some P6.5-million allocated for the two-day Ibon-Ebon Festival has been diverted to scholarship funds amounting to P5 million, which would benefit some 1,000 college and high school students from the 33 barangays of the municipality.

"Sa aking panunungkulan, mas prayoridad kong busugin ang kaisipan ng mga kabataang Candabeño, kaysa busugin ang mata sa dalawang araw na kasayahan lamang (In my administration, it is my priority to feed the minds of the young Candabenos than to entice their eyes in a two-day festival only)," Mayor Rene Maglanque said.

Initially, some 268 students received the other day at least P5,000 each from the municipal government and the Department of Labor and Employment's (Dole) Special Program for the Employment of Students or SPES.

"We coordinated with the Dole. Our 200 scholars were given P1,600 each and the municipal government gave P3,400 for their SPES with a total of P5,000 each. An additional 68 students were also given P5,000 for their studies in college and high school," Maglanque said.

The mayor said the distribution of educational financial assistance to 1,000 students, started Tuesday will be finished until the end of the year by a systematic and legal procedure allowed by the Commission on Audit.

"I came from a simple family but I dreamt of a better life. Finishing my college education is my only weapon and investment to achieve my present status in life," he said.

He explained that students who finished college education have a better chance to become more successful in life.

"I want to provide better access to quality education. That is why I opened additional high school in barangays Lanang and Pulong Gubat through the full support of the Department of Education," Maglanque said.

The awarding of educational financial assistance was witnessed by Fourth District Representative Juan Pablo "Rimpy" Bondoc, Board Member Nestor Tolentino, Arlene Tolentino, chief of Labor and Employment Office of Dole, Maribel Blanco, chief, management division of Department of Social Welfare and Development Region III, Police Senior Superintendent Marlon Valdez Madrid, provincial police director, Vice Mayor Normita Babes Evangelista and members of the Sangguniang Bayan, Jing Grupo, municipal PESO manager, other municipal department heads and employees, barangay captains and scholarship and other government project beneficiaries.
