CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- Pampanga third district Representative Oscar Rodriguez said on Thursday that he is supporting the plan of the country’s anti-drugs agency to wiretap alleged drug lords to curb the illegal trade.

"Even I am a former human rights lawyer, I am supporting it due to the gravity of the problems on drugs," Rodriguez said in a phone interview.

"When I was mayor I even joined the raid on drug lairs and I even give tips to police about suspected drug pushers," he added. "The problem on drugs is worsening."

Rodriguez said that he will support as congressman the plan of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) to wiretap suspected drug lords and financers to drastically cut the supply of illegal drugs in the country.

"Anyway, the PDEA will not be able to abuse it because it will seek permission from the court of laws. The agency has to present some proof to the court before it could get permission to listen to the phone talks of the drugs lords," he added.

On Tuesday, PDEA Director General Undersecretary Arturo Cacdac Jr. said "it's difficult" for the agency to pin down big-time drug pushers and those who finance them because "under our law, we can only arrest those who are in the possession of drugs."

Cacdac said that Senator Grace Poe, chairperson of the committee on public order and dangerous drugs, and other members of the House of Representatives "seemed already amenable to the idea of wiretapping the suspected drug lords." (Joey Pavia/Contributor)
