Santiago: ‘We will not meddle in land dispute’-A A +A

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- Mayor Edwin Santiago reiterated Tuesday that the City Government will not meddle in the on-going land dispute at Barangay Maimpis, but would rather workout a win-win settlement between farmers and property claimer lawyer Eligio Mallari.
"We will follow the rule of law. The case is already with the proper court. We will not meddle in the dispute but rather, we would again invite both farmers and the claimant to a dialogue where we would find an amicable solution favorable to them by following due, proper and legal processes," Santiago said.
He told Sun.Star Pampanga that he has requested newly installed city police officer-in-charge Superintendent Reggie Duldulao to heighten police visibility around the promises of the 130-hectare farmland.
"But then again, my instructions were for the police not to interfere with the demolition as it has a court order and a writ of demolition. They would be there to make sure that there would no longer be violence or any untoward incidents. They must be fair and should exercise maximum tolerance. Hindi sila dapat makialam sa usapin but to maintain peace and order there as it is my primary concern," said Santiago.
The mayor added that the City Government has been extending assistance to the farmers, like helping the injured with their hospital bills and other day-to-day needs. "We understand their predicament like we understand the legal point of Atty. Mallari."
Santiago also said that he would write again the camp of Mallari to reiterate his request for the blocked Maimpis Road to be re-opened.
"It is our presumption, based on DPWH (Department of Public Works and Highways) documents that there were no irregularities with the road and that it is government property. Rest assured we are keeping a keen eye on what is happening in Maimpis and that we are working hard to find an immediate resolution to the dispute para wala ng masaktan pa o gulong mangyari," said Santiago.
