SUBIC, ZAMBALES -- The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is establishing a housing project in an agricultural village here for at least 600 Badjau families who migrated from Mindanao to the provinces and cities in Central Luzon.

DSWD regional director Adelina Apostol said that their office will allot at least P60 million for the housing project. She added that the Subic Municipal Government led by Mayor Jay Khonghun will shoulder the expenses for the land development of the area.

Apostol said the members of the Moro Indigenous ethic group, most of whom resorted to begging as their major source of livelihood, will be given permanent homes in a five-hectare lot in Batiawan. She joined Batiawan Barangay Captain Jose Lawag and former Bataan Board Member Jose Alejandre Payumo III during an inspection of the site on Wednesday.

Apostol said majority of the Bajau families are living in Pampanga and Bulacan.

Apostol said that Social Secretary Corazon Soliman "knows and supports the project."

She thanked Mayor Khonghun and his father, First District Representative Jeffrey Khonghun, for their all-out support to the project.

The younger Khonghun reportedly brought the idea to the DSWD to provide a permanent shelter for the Bajaus in Batiawan, the largest village of Subic in terms of land area and is known as a major producer of vegetables and fruits.

“The place is beautiful and scenic. It’s also ideal because we can provide livelihood to the Bajaus in Batiawan,” said Apostol.

The regional director said that they may hold the groundbreaking ceremony “this month or next.”

“Once we got the resolution of the Subic municipal council supporting the project we will immediately schedule the start of the project and groundbreaking,” said Apostol.

Apostol said there are a total of at least 712 Bajau families in Region III. She added that the Cabanatuan City government is building a housing project for at least 112 Bajau families. (Joey Pavia/Contributor)
