CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- The Local Water Utilities Administration (LWUA) recently encouraged the local water districts to find other sources of potable drinking water aside from deep wells.

The LWUA is a government-owned and controlled corporation (GOCC) with a specialized lending function mandated by law to promote and oversee the development of water supply systems in provincial cities and municipalities outside Metropolitan Manila.

LWUA Administrator Andres Ibarra said the ground water is quickly approaching its carrying capacity. He said it is important to utilize the spring water for a new potable water system.

Ground water, Ibarra added, needs time to recover and should not be overused.

“The surface water such as the streams, rivers, and the likes are more sustainable,” he said.

In a statement released during the groundbreaking ceremony of a newly built pumping station and water district in the region, Ibarra highlighted the importance of water conservation in the local communities.

“Every drop of water counts which is why we continuously remind the citizens to conserve water in order to avoid the difficulty of shortage in the long run,” said Ibarra.

Water district officials are requesting for the assistance of local government units in fixing other potential sources of drinking water.
